US "should talk to Iran"The top US general in the Middle East thinks his country should talk to Iran but not Syria. We're prepared to talk to Iran but not Syria, who've cast in their lot with terrorists. And Iraq can still be stabilised, although it's not turned the corner yet.
Those are the views of the US military's top general in the Middle East, and his counterpart in the State Department. They've been giving evidence today in a Washington convulsed by competing visions of what to do in Iraq. But the main question - when to withdraw American troops - still remains deeply divisive.Democrats want a timetable, but commanders on the ground say the numbers need to stay as they are.
